The US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has formulated a highway safety initiative, 'Significant and Seamless' as a part of its efforts to cut down number of road accidents on the national roadways.
Under this plan, the authorities have outlined three key technological developments - Seatbelt Interlocks, Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS), and Forward Collision Avoidance and Mitigation (FCAM).
NHTSA claims that these three technologies carry high lifesaving potential and their efficient implementation could have significant impact on reducing death toll.
The department is dodging automotive companies to roll out latest technological developments that are expected to improve roadway safety issues.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said that safety is the department's top priority and one can achieve remarkable progress in reducing injuries and fatalities in the current era of innovation and technology.
"Today's announcement focuses on real solutions that can significantly address safety issues that have plagued this nation for decades, including failure to use seat belts, drunk driving and driver error," added Foxx.
NHTSA Administrator David Strickland stated: "In addition to our ongoing work with states and the automotive industry, we need a new vision, and a new blend of technological research to address some of the most significant and persistent threats to American motorists.
"We must look to technological intervention to make the next great leap, and get them poised for fleet adoption as soon as possible."
