Cfia Has Announced Plans to Do Away with Restrictions That Limit The Containers Sizes

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced plans to do away with existing restrictions that limit the containers size for certain foods and provide no food safety benefit.

According to CFIA, the proposed changes are expected to improve the choice of consumer and provide consistency across the food industry. The current regulations will remain in force until the regulatory process completes.

Proposed changes will include a flexible implementation time frame of up to five years, as well as a detailed evaluation of potential impacts.

CFIA compliance and enforcement activities will carry on and ministerial exemptions as well as test market authorizations pertaining to container sizes will continue to be administered.

Consumers can have a better selection, while the industry can take advantage of new packaging innovation, formats and technologies, with the proposed removal of the restrictions.
