A new survey has shown that nearly two-thirds (61 per cent) of people are still unaware of the government's marquee energy-saving scheme - the Green Deal - despite it being unveiled two weeks ago.
The conclusion of a YouGov poll commissioned by the Behaviour Change social enterprise and undertaken the week after the launch found consumers are failing to make the link between higher bills and potential for energy efficiency savings.
It stated that the Green Deal has "cut through" to large numbers of the public, despite the fact that the majority of people are not aware of the scheme.
The survey of over 1,960 adults found that 39 per cent of people had heard of the scheme, but not necessarily knew much about it.
This scheme allows households and businesses to undertake energy efficiency improvements at no upfront cost.
So, people could look to install loft insulation and the price of this will then be placed on future energy bills.
Consumers can also save money on their energy bills by installing energy efficient bathroom spotlights that also last much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Awareness of the scheme was highest among men and those aged over 60.
Executive director of Behaviour Change David Hall told Business Green that the results represented an "encouraging" start for the scheme.
He commented: "From a marketing perspective having over a third of the public aware of a new product or service within a week of its launch is a very creditable performance."
The expert claimed that the government's £2.9 million communications campaign has achieved a relative degree of success with so many people aware of the scheme.
Chief executive of Kingfisher and chair of the Green Switchover project Ian Cheshire echoed these thoughts, stating: "This progress shows that the government, businesses and charities can be a powerful combination when it comes to getting new messages out to the public."
