Agricultural Silos
Agricultural Silos are used for storage of bulk material. It facilitates to store grain or fermented seed called as silage. However, these are also used for the bulk storage of cement, coal, carbon black, wood chips, saw dust, food products, and more. There are three types of silos that are widely constructed for industrial usage bunker silos, tower silos, and bag silos. Even today in India, Agricultural Silos are constructed from dry fibrous plant materials that keep the grains free from unwanted entrances. Also, previously, silos were made from mud that are completely blocked from above and has an opening from below. This used to keep the food grains safe from moisture, rats, and varieties of insects that can harm the quality and quantity of the food grain. However today, steel or aluminum is used as a raw material in the construction of high quality silos. These silos are large in structure and can accommodate a huge quantity of material efficiently.
Construction of Silos
Design and construction of Silos are based on its industrial and agricultural uses. There are a wide range of Silos such as Cement Storage Silos, Concrete Stave Silos, Tower Silos, Bunker Silos, Low-oxygen Tower Silos, Bag Silos, Sand and Salt Silos, and more. The name of the silos itself suggests its specific uses. In context with agricultural silos, it is an airtight structure that protects silage. Agricultural Silos are an upright cylindrical structure that is up to 3 to 5 meter in diameter and 30 to 50 feet in height, commonly fabricated from steel fused with glass porcelain. The inner surface is designed in such a way to beat corrosion. It can also be constructed using other metals, wood, masonry, etc. in the form of horizontal pits, trenches (also known as trench silos) or stacks, located above or below the ground. The entire structure is properly enclosed with canvas, earth, heavy paper, or plastic that facilitates an air-free state. Silage can be unloaded from the lower part of the structure with a power-operated unloading facility.
Importance of Silos in India
