This 19 year old Kenyan designer new that there was a better alternative than kerosene. In Africa kerosene lamps are still used in many areas and cause great harm to children and adults in rural African villages. Evan Wadongo created the MwangaBora solar lamp as an alternative to the unhealthy and dangerous kerosene lamps.

The MwangaBora lamps are made from 50% recycled materials, small solar panels and LED lights. Reed Krakoff in collaboration with Wadongo lined the New York based gallery, Friedman Benda’s walls with 1000 solar lamps. In hopes to raise awareness and money to provide more villages with a safe and clean alternative to the kerosene lamp, Wadongo aims to produce and distribute solar lamps throughout rural areas of Kenya and Malawi.
