The Introduction of Geoweb Cellular Confinement

Geoweb Cellular Confinement system is typically used in construction of erosion control, channel protection, structural reinforcement for earth retention and soil stabilization in steep slopes and flat surfaces. It maintains soil compaction and thereby increasing the structural strength of the infill and pavement layer.

The concept of cellular confinement system comes after engineer conclusion, that a sand confinement system could be developed that would provide an appropriate construction technique for building roads over soft ground and also the system would not be adversely affected by wet weather conditions. The first cellular confinement system was used for load support applications in United States in the year 1980.

With the development of Geocells, the standard of its have not kept pace and the methods which are used for testing worldwide are used by pipe, electronic, automobile, security and construction industries. Cellular Confinement system creates a new composite entity when filled with compacted soil that enhanced geotechnical and mechanical properties and it causes lateral stresses on perimeter cell walls, when soil contained within the geocell is subjected to pressure. Lateral movement of soil particles are reduced by the 3D zone of confinement while high lateral stress and resistance on the cell soil interface results while vertical loading on the contained infill and the confinement, resulting in long term reinforcement maintains the soil compaction.

Geoweb Cellular Confinements are used because of various benefits such as:

• It is an eco- friendly soil stabilization solution that mix in to the natural environment.
• It can easily withstand construction activities because of its 3D structure.
• It can be installed quickly and reduced construction costs.
• It allow infill to interlock with the cell walls.
• It creates a better armored slopes.
• And by reducing down slope sliding forces in saturated solutions, it results in a more stable systems.

In addition this system is used in various applications which include the following:

• Because of its 3D lateral confinement, it ensures the long term stability of slopes using concrete surfacing and vegetated top soil. It is typically used for the applications that include roads and railway embankments, channel structures, fill slope and stabilization and pipeline stabilization etc.
• It is widely used in earth retention application where the construction of it is simplified as each layer is structurally sound thereby providing access for workers and equipments.
• Geoweb cellular confinement system can be used to increase the load capacity in areas with high traffic and heavy use. It includes the reinforcement of base and sub base layers in flexible pavements and emergency access areas.
• It is successfully used to improve the channel stability because of the soil or other fill materials in confinement that makes structure more erosion resistant.

At present, it is the most advanced soil stabilization technology available for load support, erosion control, low velocity channels and retaining structures.
