A Solar Lamp That Captures Ambient Light?

Some time ago, we brought you the Trap Light, a photoluminescent lamp that uses special light capturing substances to reproduce unused ambient light. Continuing with the work of designers Gionata Gatto & Mike Thompson, their studio has presented another innovation, the Trace Solar Lamp. It utilizes the same photoluminescent pigments to produce a ghostly, ambient glow.

The Trace Solar Lamp is a self-sufficient lighting fixture powered by ambient solar energy. The new series modifies their 2011 'trap light' but uses a more efficient shape and the material of polyurethane rubber to power ray-shaped lamps with ambient light.

The process involves pouring the pigments on the shade, which is supended so that it can be swirled around for even distribution and also artistic effect. A charge of about 30 minutes provides several hours of light. the 'trace S' small lamps utilize a combination of electrical and solar power, while the large 'trace M' model completely replaces the lightbulb with pigments only, since it has a larger surface area from which to charge. The result is captivating and cool.
