Hundreds of steel rings welded together around a wooden chandelier's remains make up the industrial style of this distinctive design from the Amsterdam-based Studio Markunpoika. Using an old wooden chandelier frame that was lined, rather coated with a web of integrated rings and burned to smithereens just leaving behind a shell of the once present chandelier. Brilliant!

The founder of Studio Markunpoika, Tuomas Markunpoika told Dezeen that, "The hardest part was to find a suitable light source, and to fix wiring so it contoured the inside shape and didn't interfere with the see-through aesthetics."

Inspired by his grandmother who struggles with Alzheimer's disease, the chandelier is part of Markunpoika's twelve-piece collection that includes a cabinet and a chair that were nominated for Designs of the Year 2013. It seemed like the next step to move forward with a chandelier design.

"When working on the other pieces of the collection I couldn't help noticing how exquisitely the multilayered exoskeleton was interacting with light and movement," said Markunpoika. "The chandelier seemed like a good next step." (Vimeo 2013)
