Germany's Stadel Museum Changed The Way Many Think About Garden Design

The architectural firm Schneider + Schumacher’s extension of Frankfurt, Germany’s Stadel Museum changed the way many think about garden design. By placing the new building below the museum’s garden, they not only created a uniquely appealing green space but they almost doubled the museum’s exhibition area.

The outer surface of the museum’s curvy roof slab is covered with green grass and 195 roof lights that vary in diameter. Especially developed for the St del extension, this rooftop garden wasn’t just created to look pretty, it was designed to be walked on. The daylight from the roof lights enter Stadel’s exhibition space below, and depending upon the amount of daylight desired the rooftop lights can be controlled via built in shading elements or amplified using the integrated LED lighting system.
