Introduction of Xsite Architecture and Philips Lighting

There is something gratifying about building and reconstructing something that was once in shambles. It's almost like giving that item a whole new chance, and that is exactly what Xsite Architecture and Philips Lighting did. Part of a regeneration project in UK's Ouseborn area of Newcastle, the run-down Maynards toffee factory has been resuscitated into 24 high end office spaces targeting specifically creative businesses.

Stainton Lighting Design Services was in charge of the lighting design and Philips LED products were selected to be used for the color changing effects for the Toffee Factory's four arches and long tall exterior chimney. The Philips products that were used included recessed ColorGraze PowerCore linear fittings in the arches, these provided surface grazing and wall-wash lighting. The Philips ColorGraze fittings provide a high level of saturation with their 30×60 degree beam angles. While the blue, green, and red LEDs provide an almost infinite selection of colors.

The Center Manager for Creative Space Management, Lisa Tolan commented: "Toffee Factory has amazing lighting and looks stunning at night, and what better way than turning our chimney into a giant 'glow stick' to raise awareness of Newcastle and Gateshead's late night culture event, The Late Shows."

"Philips were also very helpful in providing excellent sample equipment for a demonstration so that we could give the client a clear picture of what the final effect would be," he added.

The surface-mounted ColorReach PowerCore floodlights provided a generous amount of uplighting to the chimney. Utilizing red, green and blue LEDs and a wide choice of beam angles made it easy to provide accurate light distribution to the round tall chimney. The use of LEDs reduces the amount of maintenance needed during the ColorReach PowerCore floodlights lifetime.

Finally the tops of the building were illuminated using ColorReach PowerCore floodlights. These were chosen for their low profile housing and flexible mounting options making it easy to facilitate discreet placement and accurate accommodation to the bends of architectural elements. But all of this wouldn't be possible without integrating Philips PowerCore wiring system into the project. This ensures for rapid, accurate, and efficient control of the power output to the fixtures. Therefore enabling direct power from the line voltage, therefore eliminating the need for external power supplies.
