A Fiber Optic Is Made out of Glass

Tags: cable, OSP, gas, optic

A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages that modulates into light waves. A fiber optic is made out of glass. The glass used in making optic cable is in its purest form. Hence, even if the cable is several miles long, the light can still pass through. The glass is drawn into a very thin strand, with a thickness similar to that of a human hair. The glass strand is then coated in two layers of plastic.

To understand how optic cable works, let us consider an example, if you want to send telephone conversations through a ofc, analog voice signals are translated into digital signals. A laser at one end of the pipe switches on and off to send each bit. Modern fiber systems with a single laser can transmit billions of bits per second. The laser can turn on and off several billions of times per second. The new systems use multiple lasers with different colours to fit multiple signals into the same fiber. Use of fiber cable has several advantages over traditional metal lines:

1. They have a higher carrying capacity

2. There is less signal degradation

3. They are thinner

4. Low-power transmitter

5. Non-flammable

6. Lightweight and flexible

If you have chosen fiber optic cable for your company's cabling works, then installation of fiber optic cable is done in two ways: outdoor and indoor.

In an outdoor cable installation, a cable may be directly buried, pulled or blown into conduit or innerduct, or installed aerially between poles.

In an indoor cable installation, a cable can be installed in raceways, cable trays above ceilings or under floors, placed in hangers, pulled into conduit or innerduct or blown through special ducts with compressed gas.

The installation process will depend on the nature of the installation and the type of cable used. A fiber cable is designed to be pulled with greater force than copper wire, but excess stress on the cable may harm the fibers, causing eventual failure. Care must be taken during installation to prevent bending and twisting of the cable which can harm the fibers. However, if the cable run for a longer distance, and require mixing of different cables splicing of cables is suggested.

Splicing is done to create a permanent joint between two optical fibers. Splicing of cable is done in places where there is limited use of cable and where cables are not expected to be available for servicing in future. Splicing is mostly done to concatenate (joining) cables in long outside plant, where cable run for a longer distance or to mix a number of different types of cables.

Splicing is common in outside plant (OSP) applications than premises cabling, where most cables are pulled in one piece and directly terminated. There are two types of splices: fusion and mechanical.

Fusion splicing is used as it provides lower loss and least reflectance. It also provides the strongest and most reliable joint. Mechanical splicing is mostly used for temporary restoration and for multimode splicing. Adapters are used to connect or secure the two joints.

Fiber optic adapter is used to connect two fiber optic cables together. They can be used to connect to single fibers together, two fibers together, or sometimes four fibers together.

Adapters are designed for multimode or singlemode cables. The singlemode adapters offer more precise alignment of the tips of the connectors. You can use singlemode adapters to connect multimode cables, but vice-versa is not permitted. Since, this can cause misalignment of the small singlemode fibers and loss of signal strength (attenuation).
