According to the Santa Monica Pier?engineers it was time for those old outdated fluorescent, incandscents, and metal halide lights to be replaced. The constant burn outs left the pier with gaps in lighting and high maintenance cost. The replacement? Energy efficient LED light bulbs were used to replace the vintage lighting of this 97 year old landmark with one of the world's longest?surviving all-wooden carousels.

Some of the replacements include:

1.3 watt S14 LEDs replaced the 11-watt incandescent bulbs 20 watt LED Post Top Lights in a pendant style with mogul-base were used for the outdoor rest area, replacing the old 50 to 70 Watt MH/HPS bulbs TRF-A19-TPW-02 LED Bulbs in the A19-Style were used for the hard-to-reach, beacon light fixtures that circled around the Pier's perimeter Santa Monica Pier Gets an LED Makeover_1

The new lighting has the potential to provide Santa Monica with over 80% in energy savings. The new LED lamps have already reduced excessive energy requirements by more than 30% while enhancing increased safety, a reduction in maintenance time, and?less nighttime light pollution. ?The project was funded by the city of Santa Monica via a US Department of Energy?Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) awarded for?$668,000.
