Colorful and cozy, fabric hammocks have been around for a thousand years and are still handmade in places like South America that know the lap of luxury.
From bright stripes to Zen white, blanket smooth or quilted, fabric hammocks come in endless designs, making them ideal for the deck or garden. Indeed, many people use Brazilian-style fabric hammocks indoors for comfort and style, even in place of their traditional bed.
Closed-weave fabric hammocks ventilate less than open-weave rope ones do, so they're much more comfortable in cooler weather or at night. Imagine laying on a hanging blanket, and you'll get the idea.
Quilty softness. Better yet for cooler days and nights, quilted fabric hammocks are luxuriously soft, with a puff of quilt stuffing woven into pillow-soft patterns. Most quilted hammocks use a spreader bar to hold them open, making them easier to get into. (You may never want to get out). Most are big enough for two, if you feel like company, with plenty of room left over for your crossword puzzle or lucky pet.
Cotton or poly? Nearly all fabric hammocks are woven of cotton or polyester. All-natural cotton is soft and breathable, earth-friendly, easy as a t-shirt to care for, and just as friendly. Because it can hold moisture, cotton is best used in dry areas, where it is less likely to mildew. Today's polyester fabrics, eons improved over your dad's scratchy leisure suit, is more water-resistant than cotton, so it's a better choice if you're going to leave it outdoors or use it by the pool. Polyester is lightweight, so it's perfect for packing in the car on those weekend camping trips. Polyester stretches less, holds color better, and these days it is so soft it's often mistaken for cotton.
