Here are some new products currently, or anticipated to be, available for the 2014 season along with label changes of some additional weed control products.
Afforia 50.8SG (5% thifensulfuron (Harmony) + 5% tribenuron (Express) + 40.8% flumioxazin (Valor SX); groups 2 and 14 herbicides; DuPont) is an experimental herbicide premix for use in soybean for burndown/residual control of broadleaves. This ratio allows for sooner re-crop to vegetable and other sensitive crops. Registration is anticipated by 2014.
Anthem 2.15L (pyroxasulfone + fluthiacet (Cadet); groups 15 and 14 herbicides; FMC) is registered for use in corn as pre or early post applications. Typical use rate range is 7 – 9 oz/A to control annual grasses and broadleaves. (8 oz Anthem equals 2.5 oz Zidua and 0.56 fl oz Cadet.) Anthem ATZ 4.5L contains Anthem + atrazine and is used at 2 – 3 pt/A. Anthem is expected to be labeled in soybeans.
Authority Elite 7L (sulfentrazone + s-metolachlor (Dual Magnum); groups 14 and 15 herbicides; FMC) is registered for use in soybean for pre applications to control annual grasses and broadleaves. Typical use rate range is 1.5 – 2 pt/A.
Fierce 76WDG (pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin (Valor); groups 15 and 14 herbicides; Valent) can be used only in no-till or minimum-tilled fields where crop residue has not been incorporated into the soil and where soybean or corn will be planted directly into a stale seedbed, cover crop, or previous crop residue. Apply Fierce at 3 – 4.5 oz/A. (As a reference, 3.75 oz Fierce would be equivalent to 2.5 oz Valor SX and 1.9 oz Zidua.) Fierce may be applied pre or within 3 days after soybean planting but before soybean emergence. Corn must be planted between 7 and 30 days after application. Fierce provides residual control of several annual grass and broadleaf weeds, but must be tank-mixed to improve burndown control. Do not use on soils with less than 1% organic matter unless an activation rainfall (1/2 inch or more) has occurred between application and planting. Fierce also can be used as part of a fall burndown program
Glory 75WDG (metribuzin; group 5 herbicide; MANA) received a 24 (c) Special Local Need label for control of ALS-resistant chickweed in winter wheat and winter barley in Pennsylvania. Other brands of metribuzin do not have this special use in Pennsylvania. Specifically, Glory should be applied to winter wheat or barley at 2 to 4 oz/acre after the crop is beyond the 2-leaf stage but before jointing. This is a relatively low rate of metribuzin that is specifically targeting chickweed but it will also suppress other winter annual broadleaves. For best results, apply metribuzin (fall or spring) when chickweed is small (4-6 inches in diameter). Glory can be tank-mixed with other herbicides such as Harmony Extra, 2,4-D, and Clarity to broaden the spectrum of control. Some wheat and barley varieties are known to be sensitive to metribuzin and a list of known tolerant varieties is provided on the Glory label however this listing may be somewhat outdated.
Marvel 3L (fluthiacet (Cadet) + fomasafen (Reflex); group 14 herbicides; FMC) is registered for use in soybean to control many annual broadleaves postemergence at the use rate of 7.25 fl oz/A; including necessary adjuvants.
Panoflex 50SG (10% thifensulfuron (Harmony) + 40% tribenuron (Express); group 2 herbicides; DuPont) is currently registered for use in soybean, corn and others crops. Use 0.3 – 0.6 oz/A to control many annual broadleaves as a fall or spring burndown prior to planting. Tank-mix to broaden weed control spectrum. Panoflex contains the same active ingredients as Harmony Extra but at a different ratio.
Trivence (chlorimuron (Classic) + metribuzin + flumioxazin (Valor SX); groups 2, 5 and 14 herbicides; DuPont) is an experimental herbicide premix for use in soybean for burndown/residual control of broadleaves including marestail. Registration is anticipated by 2014.
Zidua 85WDG (pyroxasulfone alone; group 15 herbicide; BASF) provides good control of several annual grasses and broadleaves in corn and soybean. Zidua can be applied preplant (surface or incorporated) up to 45 days before planting or preemergence. Typical use rate is 2.5 oz/A on medium-texture soils; (rates can be adjusted for soil type or two-pass application programs). Crop must be planted at least 1 inch deep. Zidua does not control existing weeds and must be activated by at least ½” inch of rainfall prior to weed germination; otherwise, effectiveness may be reduced. Tank-mix with herbicides to broaden weed control spectrum. May be applied in a carrier of water (5 gal/A or more) or liquid nitrogen fertilizer solution (20 gal/A or more); it may be impregnated and applied on certain dry bulk fertilizers. Zidua may be applied early postemergence, but tank-mix if weeds are emerged. Expect BASF to premix pyroxasulfone with other active ingredients in the future. Zidua will we labeled for use in wheat soon.
Dow AgroSciences has reformulated some of its acetochlor products with a new NXT formulation. The products include Keystone NXT 5.6SE, Keystone LA NXT 5.5SE, FulTime 4.04SE, and Surpass NXT 7SE and Breakfree NXT (DuPont). These herbicides will have similar rates, utility, and weed control as old formulations. Dow claims this new formulation allows for better handling, improved product flow and mixing, in addition to better activation with only ¼” rainfall. These new products are currently available.
