Nokia seems to have played it safe with the choice of a dual-core processor for its first Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
The Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 smartphones,which were unveiled today,both use Qualcomm's 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual core processor with a 1GB of RAM and not the quad-core Snapdragon processor which is now available to mobile phone firms.
Perhaps significantly,Qualcomm will this month supply its quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor to LG for its new smartphone which will soon be introduced in Korea.
LG seems to prefer the quad-core processor for its better graphics capabilities.Has Nokia missed a trick here?
Snapdragon S4 Pro has the higher performance Adreno 320 graphics processor(GPU)with support for higher resolution displays.It is otherwise hardware and software compatible with the S4.
The GPU"with up to a four times performance improvement,providing a superior user experience for Web browsing,games,user interfaces and other graphics applications,"said Qualcomm.
There is also dedicated hardware to accelerate Windows and it"fully supports the top game engines in the industry from Unity,Epic and others",said Qualcomm.
And crucially,the S4 Pro is optimised for Windows 8.
