Switching Your Energy Supplier Could Save Homeowners on Their Annual Energy Bill

Switching your energy supplier could save homeowners between £200 and £300 on their annual energy bill, according to one leading energy efficiency service.

As the National Energy Action's (NEA) Sarah Wright notes, a number of households are struggling with their fuel bills this winter, with an increasing number of homes slipping into fuel poverty as a result of price rises instigated by the Big Six energy suppliers.

But as the expert notes, taking the time to shop around - or contact your fuel supplier to ensure you're on the right tariff for you - could be a beneficial use of your time and efforts.

"Switching supplier could save you up to £200 or £300 off your annual energy bill," said Ms Wright. "Particularly if you've never switched before.

"If you have access to the internet, using price comparison sites can prove an easy way to compare different tariffs, just make sure to look out for the Consumer Focus Confidence Code logo, which indicates that a site is transparent and unbiased."

And the expert notes that these approved price comparison sites are also suitable for less internet-savvy homeowners to use, so they too can find the best deal for them - information worth keeping in mind if you have elderly relatives struggling with the cost of energy.

"Many of these sites can also be contacted by phone, or you can phone each supplier directly to check out their best deal," Ms Wright said. "It is also always worth speaking to your current supplier to find out if you are on their cheapest tariff."

Another way to minimise those bills this winter can be by making eco-friendly improvements around the home. One way to keep the heat in is with cavity wall insulation, while the same material can be fitted in the attic to minimise drafts. Similarly, LED lighting - such as LED bathroom lights - can be installed to minimise your electricity spend this winter.
