The findings of a study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have highlighted the huge benefits that can be reaped by making a switch to energy-efficient lighting.

Using Africa as a case study, the report notes that if Kenya were to replace all of its fuel-dependent lighting with solar-powered LEDs, the country would see a return on the investment required to do so in just seven months, AfricaScienceNews.org reported. Following that, it would have reliable, off-grid lighting that wasn't producing any carbon emissions or costing any money whatsoever to run.

While it may seem that a retrofit installation of solar-powered LEDs has little to do with potential projects for homes and businesses within the UK, this could not be further from the truth. The advantages of making the switch to money-saving, energy-efficient lighting are exactly the same for a huge region like Kenya or a small property in the UK - to reduce carbon emissions, to lower energy bills, to keep maintenance costs down and to reap the benefits of dependable lighting.

As the cost of living rises ever higher, inflation stagnates and wages refuse to keep up, budgets across the country are being increasingly squeezed. Therefore, it is extremely important that any project delivers a quick return on investment.

Businesses concerned about the costs implicated in such an investment can rest assured that there are incentives designed to help people to make the energy-efficient switch - perhaps to energy-efficient ceiling spotlights inside or cost-effective outdoor wall lights.

Initiatives such as the Carbon Trust and Siemens Financial Services' Energy Efficiency Financing Scheme are designed to help businesses to do so. Darren Riva, head of financing for the proposal, explained how it intends to help organisations make the investment and then to pay back the money for it in affordable instalments, offset by the savings made on their energy bills.
