Alton Towers Resort has jumped on the ecological bandwagon along with so many other big corporations and invested in an energy-efficient and aesthetically improved lighting solution for the pool area of its Splash Landings hotel.
The lighting needed to be very specific as the themed hotel is designed to offer "a bright and tropical taste of the Caribbean", so the solution had to complement this unique style as the hotel aims to make people feel as if they are swimming on a tropical island when using the pool area.
According to HotelOwner.co.uk, the brief also stipulated that the solution had to be cost-effective and ecologically friendly.
One of the main challenges of the task was that it needed to be completed during the winter months outside of peak season for the business. Technical services maintenance manager at Alton Towers Warren Critchley expressed his concern that the project would not materialise in time - doubts which ultimately proved unfounded.
Speaking about the results, he said: "The lights are performing as they should do - illuminating instantly and producing excellent light quality - therefore I am extremely pleased with them."
This shows that seemingly substantial retrofit lighting projects need not be arduous and monumental tasks to take on, yet the benefits to be reaped from them can be extremely significant when it comes to bills and reducing a building's carbon footprint.
So far, the hotel has saved four tonnes of carbon emissions as a result of the installation, which will equate to annual emissions savings of 57 per cent.
Keith Wyatt, commercial director at Premium Lighting Solutions which carried out the installation, pointed out how this is a classic example of a creative lighting solution working in terms of visual aesthetics as well as cost effectiveness. "Whatever the design, significant reductions in energy output and therefore costs are achievable," he said.
