NASA's 3D food printer? Sure that may remind some of astronaut's ice cream, but it may really not what you think. Within 6 months NASA has plans to print pizzas made from three layers of nutritional powders, oil and water. This has come at a time when NASA's need for long lasting nutritious food for space travel continues to grow.

Here's the catch, while in space wheat based grains and flours are not always available. In order to allow complete availability from multiple food sources the 3D printer is capable of using alternative foods supplies unconventional to what we know on Earth. Insects, grass and algae offer an extended?shelf life of about 30 years, and would allow for an abundant food supply for space travelers.
