UK-based supermarket chain Asda is recalling its own-brand 6 Little Eat Beef, Cheese & Tomato Burgers as the product contains sulphites which is not mentioned on the label, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
The products affected by this recall are: Asda 6 Little Eat Beef, Cheese & Tomato Burgers of 450g with use by dates: 13 April 2013, 14 April 2013, 18 April 2013, 19 April 2013, 20 April 2013, 24 April 2013.
FSA stated that the product being recalled could result in a possible health risk for people who are intolerant to sulphites.
People with asthma are sensitive to sulphites and relatively small amounts may trigger an asthma attack. Customers sensitive to sulphites are advised not to eat this product and instead return it to the nearest store for a refund.
Asda is withdrawing the affected product from sale and customer notices have been displayed in stores, explaining customers the reason behind the product recall.
In addition, the company is contacting the relevant allergy support organisations, which will inform their members about the withdrawal.
Sulphites are used as preservatives in a wide range of foods particularly in soft drinks, sausages, burgers, and dried fruit and vegetables in order to maintain food colour and prolong shelf-life by preventing the growth of micro-organisms.
