California Giant Berry Farms has selected FoodLink to provide traceability data and smartphone friendly labels on every carton of its strawberries grown in the US.
Under the deal, FoodLink will develop QR coded labels for clamshell strawberry cartons. The code will provide information about the specific growing location of the packed berries, allowing trading partners and customers to trace the berries back to their source.
FoodLink stated that consumers can use a smartphone to scan the code and know the origin of any California Giant berry.
FoodLink CEO Eric Peters said, "Shoppers are increasingly demanding more and better information about the food they eat, and California Giant is among the first to cost effectively align a complex supply chain moving millions of items to embed traceability data all the way from the field to the consumer."
California Giant Berry Farms said that the new system will serve as a food safety tool and assist consumers in gaining more information about where their food is grown.
California Giant Operations vice president Lucky Westwood said, "We have worked very closely with FoodLink and our clamshell providers to create an accurate, efficient way of achieving our goals with this project."
FoodLink is the commerce and traceability platform that connects food retailers and wholesalers to a network of more than 2,000 growers, packers and shippers.
