Opel's Bochum Plant in Germany Has Been Closed Down After 52 Years of Operation

Opel is closing down its Bochum plant in Germany after 52 years of operation as the company looks to streamline cost in its European unit.

Previously the plant was employing 22,000 workers and until recently it had 3000 employees. Following the shutting down of operation, Opel is expected to keep around 300 employees at the facility to continue produce auto parts for the company.

The last vehicle made in the plat was Opel Zafira compact van which will not be sold, but donated to social work.

The decision comes as a part of General Motors' attempt to get Opel financially break-even by the middle of the decade, as the company plans to inject $5bn into the European business, reported Associated Press.

The company has also guaranteed the unions of its other German plants that workers at three other Opel facilities will not be laid off until 2018.
