Aston Martin has said that it will launch an all-electric SUV in 2021 under the Lagonda marque.
The Lagonda SUV is claimed to be the first luxury SUV to drive exclusively on zero emission powertrain technologies.
It is expected to feature bold design language first seen in the concept vehicle. The SUV will be built around near-future technologies including advanced battery electric drivetrain.
This is claimed to make the Lagonda SUV a first of its kind, an stylish, luxurious, fully electric emission-free vehicle.
Aston Martin president and CEO Andy Palmer said: “In reviving one of the most iconic names in motoring we have created a unique opportunity.
“One that allows us to cast aside an inherited 20th century approach and instead design cars around 21st century demands and desires. The Lagonda SUV is the first of its kind: a spacious, high-performance 4×4 that successfully reconciles a love of technology, luxury and style.”
Aston Martin executive vice president and chief creative officer Marek Reichman stated that the lagonda SUV will retain the boldness of the vision concept.
It is a luxury brand, but it is also one rooted in technology. It is claimed that it will be like no other SUV to drive, so, its looks have to reflect the new reality and serve as a pathfinder to future where desirable and prestigious automobiles still have a place.
Lagonda was founded by Wilbur Gunn, a machine engineer in 1904. Gunn was fascinated by the possibilities of incorporating latest technologies into the way we travel.
Lagonda was named after the fast-flowing Lagonda Creek river that ran through Gunn’s hometown in Springfield, Ohio.
The company was producing high standard in luxury travel, where limousines were powered by V12 engines. These were claimed as fit for royalty. The company’s cars were also winning races, setting new speed and endurance benchmarks.
Seeing this potential, David Brown bought the company for £52,000 in 1947, forming the Aston Martin Lagonda and creating a new brand of luxury cars.
