LG and Samsung Invest in New Battery Technology for Audi's Electric Car

German automobile manufacturer Audi will develop the battery for all-electric sport utility vehicle drawn from cell modules made by South Korean suppliers LG Chem and Samsung SDI.

The duo aim to supply battery to the car producer from their European plants as they eye investment in cell technology in the continent. It is expected to provide a driving range of over 500km.

Audi for procurement - board of management member said: "Together with our South Korean development partners, we are bringing production of the latest battery-cell technology to the EU and strengthening European industry with this key technology.

"This will allow us to supply a technological solution that makes electric cars even more attractive for our customers."

AUDI for development - board of management member Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said: "With our first battery-electric Audi-SUV, we are combining an emission-free drive system with driving pleasure.

"We will optimally integrate the innovative cell modules developed with LG Chem and Samsung SDI into our vehicle architecture, thus achieving an attractive overall package of sportiness and range."

Recently, Audi partnered with microcontrollers and automotive semiconductor firm Renesas Electronics Corporation under Audi Progressive SemiConductor Program (PSCP) for promoting innovation for automotive technology.

The tie-up involves traditional automotive control areas such as, powertrain, chassis, body and safety. It also covers driver infotainment and assistance systems, newer application areas, including automated drive, connected car and the electrical vehicle.
