Chinese electric auto maker BYD is planning to introduce plug-in hybrid SUVs in 2015 to meet demand for larger vehicles.
The company has already started taking orders for 300,000-yuan ($48,000) Tang SUV, a plug-in vehicle and it is also planning to introduce two more plug-in SUV models in 2015.
According to reports from China Passenger Car Association Passenger-vehicle sales increased 10% to 18.9 million vehicles last year. However, it was slower that the 17% gain in 2013.
SUVs still remain the fastest-growing segments in the Chinese market, where as sedan sales growth fell to 5% from 13%.
BYD aims to sell 15,000 of the e6 all-electric car to taxi fleets in 2015, and is also planning to start rental services using the model in Hong Kong.
Bloomberg reported BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu as saying: "SUV sales have been rising at a fast pace and we have enough capacity to make SUVs,"
"We will stick to the direction of plug-in hybrids."
