To celebrate the centenary, Ardagh formally opened its new factory extension.
Since 1914, metal packaging solutions were manufactured at the Sutton‐in‐Ashfield site,
originally for the production of printed fancy metal boxes or ‘decorative containers’ such
as tea caddies, biscuit tins, and Coleman’s mustard tins.
The high volume production of 400g food cans started in 1978, and the production of DWI food cans has grown, producing nearly 800 million cans a year at the site.
In 2013, Ardagh transferred the manufacturing of aerosols from its facility in Merthyr Tydfill
to Sutton‐in‐Ashfield, where 100 billion cans are produced annually.
Alex Jonker, chief operating officer of Metal Europe at Ardagh Group, told Packaging News he was proud of the facility in Sutton, which was helping the group compete in a tough market.
“It’s a tough market but it is stable. The outlook is good, we are optimistic.”
Ardagh Group in Sutton employs 200 staff and produces food cans 24/7 for many
well‐known brands such as H. J. Heinz, Baxters Food Group, Mars Pedigree and Butchers Pet
Care and aerosols for famous brands such as Reckitts, WD40, Pledge Polish, Car Plan De‐icer,
Glade air fresheners and many others.
