US automaker General Motors has developed contingency plans for wider recall related to Takata air bag inflators.

Reuters reported that the widening of the recall could lead to repair millions of vehicles.

The company is also planning to ask Takata to share GM's air bag specifications and data with TRW and Autoliv, who are rivals of Takata. This move will help GM to use any replacement parts made by other companies.

GM spokesman James Cain was quoted by the news agency as saying: "Basically, we bought an insurance policy so that the capacity is there if we need it. We don't want to be caught short-handed.

"There is only so much inflator capacity in the industry and we need to be prepared, so what we've done is prudent."

Since 2008, more than 21 million vehicles have been recalled globally by automakers including Honda, Nissan, Nissan and Mitsubishi due to this defective part.

Meanwhile, Honda Motor announced that it had signed an agreement with Autoliv to make replacement parts in about six months and also had started talks with inflator maker Daicel.
