Japanese automaker Nissan Motor has commenced production of the e-NV200 electric vehicles at its Barcelona plant in Spain.
Barcelona facility will be Nissan's global production site for the zero-emission vehicle, which will be supplied to markets across the globe including Japan.
Nissan will make the e-NV200 vehicle available in light commercial van, passenger vehicle and electric taxi variants across the European market.
The move follows an investment of €100m in Nissan's Barcelona Plant that is part of a larger €431m investment in the company's Spanish operations.
Nissan Motor chief planning officer Andy Palmer said this is a great landmark day for the company, starting production of its second electric vehicle.
"This is at a time when EVs are now recognized as mainstream technology," Palmer added.
Initially, Nissan will export the e-NV200 to about 20 international markets, while it also plans to expand its export in order to support its electric vehicle expansion strategy.
The electric vehicle will be offered as an electric powered taxi in Barcelona, which will be the first city in the world of this kind.
