Chevrolet is planning to use advanced connected vehicle technology, which will be capable of predicting and notifying drivers about certain components that might need attention before it impacts vehicle performance.
Initially the technology will be focusing upon critical components of the vehicles starting with starter motor, fuel pump, and battery of the vehicle.
The company is planning to expand the technology to other components in future.
According to General Motors the technology relies on OnStar 4G LTE, which will offer data streams from sensors within the vehicle.
Once the customer enrolled their vehicles in the service, the data from the vehicle will be sent to OnStar's secure servers and it will be assessed to check if certain conditions could impact vehicle performance.
If a problem is detected, owners will be notified about it through OnStar RemoteLink smartphone app via email, text message, and in-vehicle alerts.
This service is initially expected to roll out to 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, Suburban, Tahoe,Corvette, Silverado and Silverado HD models followed by other 2016 Chevrolet vehicles.
General Motors Global Connected Customer Experience senior vice president Alicia Boler-Davis said: "Using our innovative OnStar 4G LTE connectivity platform, we can actively monitor vehicle component health and notify our customers if covered vehicle components need attention.
"Nobody else in the industry is offering this."
