The group, which was bought out of Nampak at the start of 2011, has revealed that the new 6,200sqm facility has started production.

It is the second new facility to open since the buy-out in March 2011, after a new pharmaceutical production facility opened in Hampshire in March this year.

The new facility, which was first announced at the project stage almost a year ago, replaces an existing facility but will allow both production and warehousing to be in the same building.

New equipment has also been installed, including a four-colour Heidelberg press and additions to finishing kit.

All staff at the eastern German business have moved to the new site and a statement from Contego said that new jobs could be created in the year to come.

Contego Packaging chief executive Tom Reid (pictured, left, with site manager Michael Pellert and Frank Filipps, Regional Director Healthcare Northern Europe) said: "We are delighted that our new Wolfen facility is now up and running – on-time and within budget.

"Not only does the layout enable a more efficient workflow, it also means we can continue to comply with good manufacturing practice and allows for planned future growth."

Contego, which is owned by Platinum Equity, supplies cartons, leaflets, labels and blister pack foils to the pharmaceutical industry from ten sites across Europe.

It also produces cartons for the food and beverage sectors from two sites in the UK and one in Holland.
