Google Set to Finalise GBP 550m Hq Move to King'S Cross

Google is close to securing a deal worth in excess of GBP 550m to build a new UK headquarters at King's Cross in North London.

The move, reported by the Telegraph, will further demonstrate Mayor of London Boris Johnson's view that big technology firms moving to the UK will "propel London well up the league table of global tech cities".

Google plans to buy a 700,000 sq ft site at King's Cross as its new UK base on a 999-year lease, and is hoping to finalise the deal before 22 November, making it one of the largest ever occupational and investment agreements in the UK, Property Week reports.

The tech giant is then expected to move into the new offices in 2015.

Google already has offices in Victoria and Soho, and earlier this year opened its London Campus in east London's Tech City.

Cutting the ribbon on the London Campus back in March, Chancellor George Osborne said the facility would help the UK to become "the technology centre of Europe".

Initially the Campus offered desk space and mentoring to London tech firms but in July Google extended this to firms within the rest of the UK.

Google's global headquarters, dubbed the "Googleplex", are situated in Mountain View in California. It has more than 70 offices in more than 40 countries, including Australia, Nigeria, Israel and Brazil.
