The incorporation of Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) into the new GPU increases its performance by 50%.
ARM has launched new Mali-T600 Series graphics processing units (GPUs) which are expected to enhance the user experience for tablets, smartphones and smart-TVs.
Developed on the company's Midgard architecture, second-generation the new GPU features adaptive scalable texture compression (ASTC), which is a texture compression technique to enhance performance of the device and increases battery life in devices.
The company claims incorporation of Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) increases performance by 50%. Being launched in three different configurations, the first two, the Mali-T624 and Mali-T628, can be used in smartphones and 'smart TV' sets, while the Mali-T678 is designed to enhance performance of tablet devices, the company said.
ARM Media Processing Division general manager Pete Hutton said people expect higher standards of visual computing on their smartphones, tablets and smart-TVs with seamless access to their digital world and personal content.
"GPU compute enables this as it increases the range of functions mobile devices can perform within the available battery life," Hutton said.
The Mali-T624 GPU offers scalability from one to four cores, while Mali-T628 can be scaled from one to eight cores.
The GPUs will offer enhanced graphics displays in advanced consumer applications, such as 3D graphics, visual computing and real time photo editing for smartphones and smart-TVs.
The ARM Mali-T678 GPU offers a four-fold increase in performance when compared with the Mali-T624 GPU with ALU support.
Mali-T678 can be used for energy-efficient visual computing applications, such as computational photography, multi perspective views and augmented reality.
