Mercedes-Benz has announced that it is planning to expand the production capacities of its SUVs in the US.
US based contract manufacturer AM General is also expected to join the production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars for the production of the R-Class in South Bend, Indiana.
The company is planning to beef up the production capacity at Mercedes-Benz Tuscaloosa plant to commence production of M-Class, GL-Class and the new GLE Coupé due in summer 2015.
Tuscaloosa plant is expected to reach production capacity of more than 300,000 units in 2015.
Apart from the SUV models, the plant has also been producing the new C-Class sedan since June 2014.
The company is planning to renew its entire SUV portfolio this year, with the introduction of the revamped M-Class and the GL-Class, Mercedes-Benz nomenclature and the GLE Coupé, which is also expected to be rolled out as a new model.
Mercedes-Benz Cars Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management Divisional Board member Markus Schfer said: "Within our growth strategy we are expanding our global production network and will additionally use the capacities of a contract manufacturer.
"We are thus increasing flexibility and continue to improve our competitiveness."
