General Motors has extended the deadline by one more month for victims and their families of faulty ignition switches to apply for compensation.
The previous set deadline was for 31st December and the decision to extend the date till 31st January 2015, and the decision has been taken after attorney Ken Feinberg's recommendation.
New York Times reported G.M. spokesman James R. Cain saying: "We agreed with Ken Feinberg's recommendation to extend the compensation program deadline.
"Our goal with the program has been to reach every eligible person impacted."
The decision of extension came after the family of victim Jean P. Averill claimed that they did not know about the program because the company did not inform about it, reported New York Times.
However, Ken Feinberg claimed that the decision was not triggered by the claim made by Averill family, but was made to allow hundreds of thousands of people who are just receiving notices about the program.
The company is sending out about 850,000 letters to new owners and registrants of used vehicles, and reports suggest that it has already sent out around 4.5 million letters to current and former owners of affected cars.
