Tesla Motors Offers Two Low-Cost Model S Versions

Electric car-maker Tesla Motors is introducing two low-cost versions of Model S Sedan, starting at $66,000 in US.

The existing Model S starts about $76,000 and is delivered to customers at nearly $100,000.

The rear-wheel drive Model S 60 and the all-wheel drive Model S 60D are the two new versions, will have a range of over 200 miles.

Both the versions will have a battery pack with a capacity of 75 kilowatt-hours (kWh), but will be limited to a capacity of 60 kWh.

Tesla said owners may later choose to upgrade their vehicles to a 75kWh battery with a software update, if they seek to add to their car's battery capacity in the future.

The company is planning to manufacture between 80,000 and 90,000 electric cars in this year and 500,000 by 2018. Most of these are vehicles are anticipated to be Model S cars.

In separate news, Tesla Motors revealed details about the supposed safety of Model S suspensions. The company said there is no safety defect with the suspensions in either the Model S or Model X.

The company addd that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not opened any investigation nor has it even started a preliminary evaluation.

The federal agency is collecting information from car-owners and also from the company about the issue.
