German automobile manufacturer Opel is set to launch its new engine, armed with 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo, at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, in September.
The engine, which has a four-cylinder turbocharged unit with central direct fuel injection, is capable of translating into two outputs - 92 kW/125 hp and 110 kW/150 hp.
GM Powertrain Engineering Europe vice-president Christian Müller said: "Our new turbocharged 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine with central direct injection is part of the newly designer small gasoline engine family and embodies its attributes 'powerful, efficient and cultivated'. The all-aluminum unit is not only environmentally friendly but also sets new standards in driving comfort."
The engine is part of small-gasoline engine family, which denotes those with three or four cylinders offering a displacement below 1.6 liters.
This group of engines have been said to power the launch of 17 new engines by the carmaker between 2014 and 2018, the company said.
Capable of delivering a maximum torque of up to 245 Nm, the maximum power of the engine hovers around 2,000 to 3,500 rpm.
The turbo engine has been stated to burn a mere 4.9 liters of gasoline per 100km in the combined cycle denoted as 114 g/km CO2.
Besides, the all-Aluminum 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo engine, manufactured at Opel Flex Plant in Szentgotthárd, has been said to provide lesser weight to the vehicle as it is ten kilograms lighter than the cast-iron block of the 1.4-liter turbo.
