Sonoco Has Unveiled a New Biomass Facility at Its Hartsville Plant in South Carolina

Packaging services provider Sonoco has unveiled a new biomass facility at its Hartsville plant in South Carolina as part of a $100m investment in the Darlington County compound.

According to the company, the new boiler can generate about 16MW of electricity as well as steam by consuming woody biomass from regional logging activity.

Electricity generated at the plant, which will also run on natural gas, will be supplied to the manufacturing complex.

Sonoco president and CEO Jack Sanders said, "We took more than two years to complete final engineering, fabricate the boiler, put together the infrastructure and complete construction of what we believe to be one of the nation's most state-of-the-art biomass co-generation boiler systems."

The company is engaged in providing various consumer packaging, industrial products, protective packaging, and displays and packaging supply chain services, and has operations in 34 nations.
