According to the car maker, the investment will create 150 jobs at the site.

This move is part of the company's 2015 UAW collective bargaining agreement to invest $9bn in its facilities and to create at least 8,500 jobs across its facilities in the US over the next four years.

The investment and creation of jobs will support the production of the second-generation 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine family to be used in the 2017 Ford F-150 line-up.

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will have a 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine, which will produce higher power with greater fuel efficiency.

UAW National Ford Department, vice president, Jimmy Settles said: "This is very exciting news for the hardworking men and women of Cleveland Engine Plant and the Ohio community as a whole."

"The team at Cleveland Engine is thrilled to begin building one of the most technologically advanced engines ever designed for the all-new F-150 Raptor."

At present, the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine is produced at the Cleveland plant and it powers 2016 Ford F-150, Explorer, Expedition, Transit, Flex and Taurus.

Ford Americas, president, Joe Hinrichs said: "Ford customers have embraced EcoBoost's unbeatable combination of power and efficiency, with more than 60 percent of F-150 customers choosing trucks powered by EcoBoost."

"This second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is another great example of Ford continuously improving and innovating to give these hardworking customers the best engines and trucks we can."

The company says that the EcoBoost engines which were introduced in 2009 have been a success because they deliver the same capability as larger-displacement engines and offer better fuel economy.

The EcoBoost engines use smaller overall engine size coupled with turbocharging, gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing to provide drivers with the power that they want and the fuel economy that they need.
