The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an alert on turkey butterflies from Severnside Provisions in Newport, South Wales, as they have been processed in an unapproved establishment.
On 21 December, the agency alerted local authorities regarding the turkey butterflies.
Further investigations revealed that 18 tons of the product have been supplied to independent butchers and catering outlets across South and Mid Wales, South West and South Central England.
Severnside Provisions is approved for bacon slicing and cold storage, rewrapping of raw, cooked and ready to eat dry products; however, it was processing turkeys in an unhygienic conditions, the agency noted.
The withdrawal affects all dates and batch codes of turkey butterflies produced by Severnside Provisions.
Consumers who have purchased the product have been advised not to eat it and instead return it to the place of purchase.
