Infiniti Cars Australia has officially updated the names of its model range in line with a new nomenclature framework first announced in 2012.
Replacing the outgoing G coupe and convertible, M sedan and FX SUV, the new Infiniti Q family comprises the Q60, Q70 and QX70 respectively.
The all-new mid-sized Q50 sports sedan –confirmed to start at $51,990– will also take its place in the line-up upon its local arrival in February.
Infiniti Motor Company president Johan de Nysschen said in December 2012 that the brand required a clear and consistent nomenclature that reflected its new identity and direction.
“After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that ‘Q’ captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasising our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti’s first iconic flagship product in 1989,” de Nysschen said.
Tied to a seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, the entry-level Infiniti Q50 2.2d GT will be powered by a 125kW/400Nm Mercedes-Benz-sourced 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and claim a combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.2 litres per 100km. Available with the option of all-wheel drive, the 268kW/546Nm Q50 Hybrid teams a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor to claim 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds and 6.8L/100km.
Selling a total of 304 vehicles in 2013, up 85 units on 2012, the luxury Japanese manufacturer had two cars finish in CarAdvice’s Top 12 Worst-selling cars list for the year just gone – the Infiniti M finishing sixth with 42, the G37 10th with 75.
