US-based Freshway Foods is recalling 6,671 pounds of sliced apples that were packaged on 12 November over concerns of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The products subject to recall include 2.4 oz red apple slices with a use by date of 30 November, 14 oz red apple slices in a Motts Interlocking Bag with a use by date of 3 December or 6 December and 14 oz green apple slices in a Motts Interlocking Bag.
The recall has been initiated after the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services noticed the presence of bacteria in a random sample of sliced green apple product during a routine test.
Freshway has requested the consumers who have purchased the products associated with the recall not to consume them, but instead discard the products.
Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
