US carmaker Ford has unveiled the new 3.2L five-cylinder turbo diesel engine for its 2014 Transit commercial van, which will be on sale in North America during late 2013.
The 3.2L turbo diesel will be mated to Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission and is expected to generate an output of about 197hp and 347lbft of torque.
The new engine incorporates piezoelectric fuel injectors that are fed through a high-pressure common rail fuel system and improved emissions technologies.
Precise injection timing and calibration are expected to offer smooth combustion process to cut hard diesel combustion clatter, which decreases noise levels.
Features of the new Power Stroke 3.2L include quick-start glow plugs, iron cylinder block, aluminum cylinder heads, variable nozzle turbocharger, integrated diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter.
Ford is manufacturing the new powertrain at Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth,South Africa and will be exported to its Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo,US.
The carmaker is also planning to build eight new vehicles, which will deliver 40 mpg or higher mileage in 2013.
