BMW is developing LED Street lights equipped with sockets that can be used for charging electric vehicles.
The company has reportedly made two prototypes of "Light and Charge" street lights which is designed to combine efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LED) with ChargeNow recharging stations for electric cars, reported Reuters.
The new technology is aimed at reducing the infrastructure cost that is required to build charging stations and dedicated power outlets.
BMW member of the board of management Peter Schwarzenbauer told the news agency: "Seamless charging infrastructure is essential if we want to see more electric vehicles on the road in our cities in the future.
According to BMW the new charging stations will be designed to suit the requirement of different types of eclectic vehicles, and Drivers will be able to pay for charging their cars via a mobile phone app.
The company already has already installed two charging stations in front of the BMW headquarters.
