Farmers in Ghana Adequately Prepared to Combat Bird Flu

Ghana’s Veterinary Service Department has sought to allay concerns that the outbreak of bird flu in Nigeria is likely to be imported into Ghana.

The Veterinary Services Department deputy director Dr. Kenneth Gbeddy assured that the country is adequately prepared to combat the flu.

However as a precaution, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture plans to ban import of poultry products from Nigeria.

According to veterinary authorities in Nigeria, severe outbreak of disease has spread to 21 commercial farms in the country with more than 140,000 birds exposed to the virus, reports Spy Ghana.

Farmers in Ghana were told to prevent foreign or wild birds from entering into their poultry pens as those are the agents that are most likely to carry the virus into their flocks.
