Irish catering supplier Rangelands Foods is recalling more than 9000 frozen burgers as they contain significant levels of horse meat, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).
This move comes after testing conducted by Rangelands Foods revealed that some of the burgers contained about 5% to 30% horse meat.
The burgers, which were made using the meat sourced from Poland, were produced in September 2012. The affected products were distributed in Ireland as well as to five other European countries. They were sold caterers and wholesalers, but were not available directly to customers.
FSAI has requested food businesses to remove the implicated batches of Rangeland Foods frozen burgers from sale. Food businesses who may have frozen burgers from other suppliers have been asked check with their supplier if they were supplied by Rangeland Foods.
