Scientists Developed an Approach to Test Horse Meat

The 2013 Horse Scandal (in UK referred as Horsegate) first came into light on 15 January 2013 when horse DNA had been discovered in frozen beefburgers sold in several Irish and British supermarket. Though horse meat is not harmful for human health, it is considered taboo in many countries like UK and Ireland. So when this happened at that time, a larger number of people were annoyed. So, if there’s a way that can test horse meat in a short time line, most parts of the question can be solved.

Scientists all over the world have been racing to figure out a wonderful way to deal with this. A recent study seems to give us hope for a new testing way. Scientists in this study have developed an approach by using a key technology known as “Pulsar” which is a well-respected analytical technique used in chemistry world wide. Traditional testing tools are always large and expensive, however, Pulsar is based on permanent magnets and ease of operation.

“A useful test should be easy and quick. So, keeping this in mind, we developed this method. What we need to do is several minutes’s shaking of a gram of meat in a solvent and a few minutes of data acquisition on Pulsar are enough.” said the chief scientists in this study. This method according to the scientists can work well in the supply chain as a test.
