Chinese and Thai venture SAIC Motor-CP will manufacture MG brand eco-cars at a new plant to be built in Thailand next year.

Having obtained regulatory approvals earlier this week, the project will witness an investment of Thb30bn in the plant that will have an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

The eco-car line is estimated to need an investment of Thb7.6bn ($232m).

SAIC plans to produce 110,000 eco-cars annually, and utilize the remaining capacity to manufacture other MG brand vehicles.

However, production at the plant will begin only after the company's first plant reaches its full capacity of 50,000 units. The factory was commissioned in June.

SAIC Motor-CP president Wu Huan was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying: "The future plant is planned for MG car production once the first plant's production reaches its full annual capacity of 50,000 cars, which is expected to happen in four or five years."

Founded in 2012, SAIC-CP is a joint venture 51% owned by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and 49% by Charoen Pokphand Group.
