Volkswagen Unveils Ai-Powered Driverless Concept Vehicle

German automaker Volkswagen has unveiled its new electric-powered I.D Vizzion concept at the 2018 Geneva motor show.

The fourth member of the I.D. Family features Level 5 automation and artificial intelligence (AI).

Based on the MEB platform, the I.D. VIZZION concept car features an electric all-wheel-drive system delivering 302 horsepower and an estimated range of up to 413 miles on the European cycle.

It uses biometrics to open doors and adjust settings for known occupants.

The drive system components of the MEB architecture are incorporated into the I.D. VIZZION package.

The company has already showcased three new models including the compact ID and the ID CROZZ SUV and the ID BUZZ microbus. It is the fourth concept vehicle from the ID family.

The I.D. VIZZION has autonomous driving capabilities and can be operated with voice and gesture control, powered by AI with machine learning technology. This is the first vehicle in the ID family to have self-driving capabilities.

The I.D. VIZZION, which is anticipated to come to production in 2022, will initially be available with conventional controls.

Volkswagen stated that possibly by 2030, the ID Vizzion will have a ‘digital chauffeur’ which can take control of the vehicle, without the need for the vehicle to have a steering wheel or visible controls. The concept vehicle can drive, steer and navigate by itself.

It can also recognize the passengers and can adjust the insides based on their personal tastes and preferences.

As per the company, the ID Vizzion has also been designed for Level 5 autonomous driving, so it can exclusively drive the vehicle and there is no need for a driver’s seat, steering wheel, dash panel or foot pedals.

The vehicle can detect the road and objects via an array of inter-connected laser scanners, ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors for objects in the near-zone and radar sensors for long distances, front and rear cameras and side area view cameras.

Traffic data is also obtained continuously via the cloud and is compared with the data collected by the vehicle. With connected car technology, the vehicle can obtain data and use swarm intelligence of the immediate surroundings.
