Bmw and Nash Technologies Are Working to Improve Mobile Reception Within Vehicles

BMW Group along with electronic automotive supplier peiker acustic and network provider Nash Technologies are working on a research project dubbed “Vehicular Small Cell” to improve mobile reception within vehicles.

The companies will undertake development of a femtocell for mobile in-car application as a part of the project.

The "Vehicular Small Cell" is being designed to provide optimal access to cellular networks through the vehicle aerial while reducing electromagnetic radiation inside the vehicle.

Vehicular Small Cell is expected to set up a wireless connection between the mobile devices in the car.

With the improved wireless connectivity, BMW expects the number of interruption of services to reduce and facilitate more stable connection quality while driving.

The system is also likely to allow higher bit rates to be transmitted which will improve services like web streaming and internet surfing.

BMW Group Project Manager Dr Peter Fertl said: "The 'Vehicular Small Cell' will allow our customers to enjoy uninterrupted in-car usage of all mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other connected devices of the future - even when driving through areas with poor cellular coverage."
