Big Sun Is Optimistic About Its Business Operations in The Second Quarter of 2012

Big Sun holds rosy outlook on 2012 Patty Wang,Taipei;Adam Hwang,DIGITIMES[Thursday 10 May 2012]Big Sun Energy Technology,a Taiwan-based maker of crystalline silicon solar cells,is optimistic about its business operations in the second quarter of 2012,according to company chairman Lo Chia-ching.

The government in Italy's plans to reduce feed-in tariffs for PV systems installed after late June has caused booming demand for PV modules in Italy in the second quarter,Lo indicated.Big Sun has fully utilized its production capacity and is expected to remain fully-loaded until September 2012,Lo said.

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon solar cells account for 70%and 30%,respectively,of Big Sun'output currently,with energy conversion rates for the former reaching a high of 19.2%,Lo said.Quotes for monocrystalline solar cells have dropped to US$0.5-0.7/W and are not expected to fall further,Lo noted.

Big Sun recorded revenues of NT$498 million(US$16.9 million)and gross margin of 1.27%in the first quarter of 2012,with more than 40%of revenues coming from Japan.Gross margins of 1.27%were good as most of Taiwan-based makers suffered gross operating losses.
